No words. No words.

No words. No words.

LA Lakers 115, Memphis 98

(37-9)

I’m not writing this one up. It’s my own version of flying the flag at half-mast. Lame, I know, but it’s the best I’ve got. In case you hadn’t already heard, Bynum will be out 8-12 weeks with a torn MCL. That means he will likely miss the rest of the regular season but will hopefully be back in time for the playoffs. I guess if it had to happen, it might as well be now so he can get back into his stride in time for the later rounds (fingers crossed…). In the meantime, Odom will be added to the starting line-up and Gasol will shift over to center. I can’t lie – that’s not the worst option in the world. Plenty of teams would kill to have that kind of firepower and coming off the bench, no less. Besides missing Bynum’s production and presence, we will also miss having Lamar anchor the second unit and act as the bench’s playmaker. My guess is that we’ll hold our own well enough. It’ll probably mean a handful or so more losses, but with our cushion hopefully we can still finish atop the West. Whether or not we can keep up with the Beasts of the East is another story. Somehow home court advantage in the Finals seems like a pipe dream right now, but I’m not throwing in the towel yet. Maybe the injury will galvanize us. Maybe it will kick our butts into active gear so that we start playing like we actually care. As long as Drew is back for the postseason, I won’t resort to self-flagellation.

Oh, and we won. We beat the Grizzlies, who were in the midst of an 11-game losing streak when we rolled into town. To be honest, I always worry when we take on a team on a long skid, because it gives them extra incentive to fight against us. The Kings were in a similar position when they smacked us around, so I was glad to see us leave with the W. It took us a good second-half comeback to pull this one out, but I’m not complaining, especially after how shellshocked we looked when Bynum went out. And the Grizzlies were kind enough to bow out for us, making it 2-0 so far on the road trip. We look well on our way to 3-0 against the Knicks right now too, but you can never be too sure with this team. I only wish I could mourn our loss with Stu.

Yeah. Glad we pulled it out after Bynum went down. Also, tonight’s game at MSG was sweet. Kobe pulled out the sniper rifle and burried 61 points in 37 minutes. And set a MSG record. Not bad I guess. It’s always cool to see the Mamba shoot so well and play with such passion.
I don’t know if you could see it, but Kobe looked almost indifferent about the whole thing. Only maybe one or two smiles or fist-pumping. This wasn’t a game of celebration for him … he was hurting on the inside and I could see it.

He was all business, for sure. I think he probably blames himself a little bit for Bynum’s injury, which contributed to his performance tonight. You could see it in his face when Bynum went down, just pure shock and the inability to even respond. It’s not a viable strategy for the long term, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him drop 60+ every night. =)
